Travel Day Edition: Life as a D1 Student Athlete

Since being a student athlete means balancing sports, school, and travel, game days on the road can be long but exciting. April 17th was one of our busy travel days. From early practice to a long bus ride and team dinner, the whole day was about getting ready for our game in Syracuse. Travel days are busy from the moment I wake up until I finally go to sleep. Here is what my travel day looked like!

Morning Practice (7:00-9:00 AM)

We have practice from 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning. This is where we get focused, go over plays, and make sure we are ready for the weekend ahead. Practice can be tiring, but it helps us stay sharp.

Quick Reset at Home

After practice, I go home, shower, and get ready for the trip. It is important to move quickly because we have a full day ahead.

Load the Bus & Breakfast (10:30 AM)

At 10:30, we load the bus with all of our bags and equipment. Once everything is packed, we eat breakfast before heading out.

Bus Ride to Syracuse (11:00 AM)

At 11:00, we left for Syracuse. The bus ride is about four hours long. During the ride, I usually do homework, read, or relax. Travel time is one of the best chances to stay caught up with schoolwork.

Coffee Stop

Before getting to the hotel, we made a quick stop for at 7brew. It was the perfect little break after being on the bus for hours and gave everyone some extra energy.

Hotel Arrival (5:00 PM)

We got to the hotel around 5:00 PM and had time to get settled and ready for dinner after a long day of travel.

Team Dinner Night (7:30 PM)

At 7:30 PM, we went to our teammate’s country club for team dinner. We ate together and took pictures. It was a fun way to spend time together before a big game.

Back to the Hotel (8:30 PM)

After dinner, we got back on the bus and headed to the hotel around 8:30 PM. Once we got back, I showered and started winding down for the night.

Recovery Mode (9:30 PM)

By 9:30 PM, it was time for recovery boots, watching film, and getting ready for bed. Recovery is just as important as practice, especially before a game.

April 17th was a long but exciting day. Travel days can be tiring, but getting to experience them with my team is one of the best parts of being a student athlete!
