What Summer is like as a Division One Athlete

Since summer is around the corner, many people think of vacations, beach days, and relaxing. While student athletes enjoy those things too, summer also looks very different for us. Summer is a time to keep working, stay in shape, and prepare for the next season. It is a balance of training, fun, and responsibility.

Summer Training

Even though school is out, workouts do not stop for student athletes. Summer is one of the most important times to improve strength, speed, and conditioning. Many athletes follow workout plans from their coaches and spend time in the gym, on the field, or practicing skills. Staying consistent during summer can make a big difference once the season starts.

Balance

Summer is not only about training. Student athletes still make time for vacations, hanging out with friends, and enjoying the warm weather. The challenge is balancing fun with responsibility. Athletes know they have goals to reach, so they have to stay disciplined while still enjoying their break.

Getting Ready for Preseason

Because my season is in the spring, the work really starts in the fall. That is when conditioning, running, and team training picks up. Summer is the time to prepare so you do not feel behind when preseason starts. Putting in work early helps you come back stronger, faster, and more confident.

Why Summer Matters

What an athlete does in the summer often shows during the season. Hard work during the off-season can lead to better performance, more confidence, and team success. Summer is where progress happens when no one is watching.

While summer may look relaxing to others, for student athletes it is also a season of growth. It is a time to work hard, stay focused, and get ready for preseason. Being a student athlete means always preparing for what comes next.
