5 Things That Help Me Stay Motivated as a D1 Student-Athlete

Being a Division I student-athlete is intense. Balancing daily practices, strength training, travel for games, and schoolwork can feel overwhelming. But I’ve found ways to stay inspired and motivated no matter how busy my schedule gets.

1. Setting Goals

I always set clear goals, both short-term and long-term. Whether it’s improving my performance on the field, increasing my stats, or keeping my GPA high, having goals keeps me focused. Even small progress motivates me to push harder every day.

2. Staying Organized

Time management is key. I use a planner to track practices, classes, workouts, study sessions and other things I need to do. Seeing my schedule laid out helps me prioritize and prevents me from feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

3. Surrounding Myself with Supportive People

Being around teammates, coaches, friends, and family who push me and believe in me makes a huge difference. Their encouragement keeps me motivated on tough days and reminds me why I work so hard.

4. Remembering My “Why”

It’s easy to get burnt out in Division I sports, but my team and I always take time to talk about our “whys”, why we play, why we show up every day, and what drives us. Hearing my teammates share their reasons and reflecting on my own reminds me of my love for the game, my desire to improve, and the opportunities sports give me. Connecting to our “whys” keeps all of us motivated, even on the toughest days.

5. Celebrating The Little Things

Even small wins matter. Whether it’s mastering a new skill, improving a stat, or finishing a tough week, celebrating progress and the little things keeps me encouraged and proud of my hard work.

Being a Division I student-athlete takes discipline, resilience, and focus. Staying motivated is all about goals, mindset, organization, and remembering why you started. With these strategies, I can continue growing both on and off the field.
