Being a D1 lacrosse player and a full-time student at Fairleigh Dickinson University is hard, but I’ve learned how to handle it. My days are always busy. I have class, practice, lifts, games, and homework, so it is so important to stay organized.
Living By my Planner
One of the biggest things that helps me is staying organized. I write down when assignments are due, when we have games, lift, and when I have practice/film. This keeps me from waiting until the last minute and getting stressed.
Using My Free Time
Whenever I have a break between classes, I try to get some work done. Even if it’s only for 20–30 minutes, it helps. On bus rides or plane rides to games, I bring my laptop and my planner so I don’t fall behind with my assignments.
Staying Focused in Class
Since I don’t have a lot of extra time to relearn things later, I make sure I pay attention in class and write everything down. This helps me understand the material the first time so I don’t have to spend hours trying to teach it to myself later.
Making Time for Myself
Even with a busy schedule, I try to give myself a little time to relax. Whether it’s getting food with friends, self-care and watching my show, or just taking a break to lay down for a bit, it helps me reset so I don’t get burned out.
Leaning on My Teammates
My teammates help a lot because we are all going through the same thing. We remind each other about assignments, go to the library together, and keep each other motivated when we’re tired or stressed.
Why It’s All Worth it
Being a D1 athlete while going to school has taught me time management, discipline, and how to work hard even when I’m tired. It’s stressful sometimes, but it’s also very rewarding. I’m getting my education while playing the sport I love, and that makes all the hard work worth it.
